Does Weight Watchers Work?

Does Weight Watchers Work?

We recently asked someone who had already been through Weight Watchers what she thought. Here is her Weight Watchers review:

Does Weight Watchers work?

During my college days I really managed to make some bad choices when it came to what I ate and drank. The phrase “freshman 15” really hit home for me and I was so disappointed with myself for letting my weight get out of hand. The same scenario had happened to a couple of girls that I lived with at the time and we decided to give Weight Watchers a try to see if we liked it and more importantly, to answer the question, does weight watchers work?

A few weeks later we enrolled in a Weight Watchers meeting at a church in our neighborhood. It was comprised mostly of middle aged women. Some only had a few pounds to lose and some had 100 or more pounds to lose. The meeting was led by another woman who had been doing the program for years and had become very successful as a result. So now we were really wondering, does Weight Watchers work?

We were given a booklet of the foods that we should and should not eat and portion sizes. We were told to eat a certain point amount for each day. My point amount was 23. I thought this would be pretty manageable and could really work for me. I got home and discovered that an apple was close to 5 points and a slice of cheese was pretty much off the Richter. I tried the points for a few weeks and ended up losing about 10 pounds or so. I was pleased with the results that I got for the amount of time that I put into it.

The downside about Weight Watchers is that I felt like I was obsessed with counting my points and trying to come up with every sort of food scenario that I could to get the most out of my points. I felt like I was a slave to the diet. The weekly meetings weren’t much to write home about either. It was a lot of older women using the meeting as their platform of how the world had done them wrong and how food was the only way for them to get through the day. For me I really could have cared less about being a shoulder to cry on. I was there to try and make myself more educated about what I was eating, not hear about some sob story. Does weight watchers work?

I think the meetings would have been more beneficial if we got our information from a dietitian or a nutritionist rather than some lady that just boasted about what worked for her. Having someone there that actually knows the science behind what you are eating and what it does to your body would be a lot more informative. The same thing can’t work for everyone and her approach kind of belittled others if they hadn’t had the success that she had. The atmosphere was almost like an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting where each of us had shamed ourselves into getting help.

Overall I’m sure that Weight Watchers can be very beneficial for the right person. It is great if you want to just get support from other people that are in the same boat as you but not so great if you just want to know what you are supposed to eat and get out of there. I would say give it a try if you think it would help you. I hope that answers the question, does Weight Watchers work?
