A study in San Diego found that those people who lived in urban neighborhoods tended to be healthier than people that lived in the suburbs because urbanites lived within walking distance of stores and were more likely to walk there. The average weight difference among people in the two communities that were surveyed is astonishing. “I want to lose weight” for people who have already integrated walking into their lifestyle is a bit easier to accomplish than it is for people who are trying to avoid becoming sedentary due to their career or other life pressures.

Most North Americans have fine-tuned their diets for decades after reaching adulthood and will continue to do so for the rest of their lives with mixed effect.

For a select group of achievement-oriented Americans, I want to lose weight means accelerated physical training that goads their metabolism into the same shape it was in when it was younger. The concept is to run marathons or compete in triathlons in order to push the body to the point where the metabolism continues to help the individual to stay slim as their body continues to burn calories. For these people, staying ahead of change as they age, combined with a healthy diet seems to work. As surgical procedures advance, even the morbidly obese are now able to shed weight with the help of surgery. Liposuction and stapling the stomach are two procedures that are popular.

Famed soccer great Maradona even had his stomach stapled to see if would help keep his weight down, which it eventually did. Liposuction has become a common surgery in Southern California and other parts of the country. The biggest danger with liposuction is that it is a process that removes fat and does not remove the reason that it got there. If a person is committed to remaining in shape, they will develop the habits or lifestyle necessary to reach their goal. If they became obese because of their lifestyle and not a disease or medical condition, the weight may be added back again just as quickly.
